Ah, Bordeaux ! Its wines, its cannelés, its sunny quays… but let’s not lie to ourselves, in winter, there’s a bit of a lack of snow for adventurous mules.

Rest assured, the Bordeaux region hasn't said its last word on the outdoor side. Because, yes, even in a somewhat gloomy weather, there are plenty of cool things to do to enjoy winter without going to Chamonix (even if we like it a lot too, eh).

So, get out your mittens, adjust your hat, and follow the Muule guide: here are the best outdoor activities to try this winter near Bordeaux . And we promise, we'll also give you tips on how to be well equipped with a few nuggets.

1. Hiking in the snow...well almost.

⏱ Driving time: approximately 1 hour 45 minutes.

Frosty landscapes, majestic pines, glacial silence. Pretty sexy as a program, right? Come on, we'll take you to the heights of the Landes Regional Natural Park .

More than 200 marked trails, less than 2 hours from Bordeaux, no less. By bike or on foot, in easy or ultra-sporty mode, you should find THE hike among a wide choice of routes . Whatever happens, we advise you to leave at dawn with a good thermos of coffee to fully enjoy this nature session.

Little Muule tips : waterproof hiking shoes (because wading through mud is so-so) and a technical base layer. Don't forget touchscreen gloves so you can take crazy photos without losing a finger.

2. Fatbike on the Landes beaches.

⏱ Driving time: 1 hour max.

Do you love mountain biking? You'll love fatbiking . You know, that bike with super-wide tires that rolls on sand, snow (ok, we get it, we forget about that in this area) and muddy terrain.

Head to Lacanau or the Arcachon Bay for a trip to the forest and the frozen seaside. In winter, it's magical: invigorating wind, deserted beaches and trails, zero tourists. In sports mode or a "responsible" chill out stroll (for the most eco-friendly members of the team), a fun experience guaranteed.

Muule tips : think about a windproof and breathable jacket, like an ultra-versatile softshell . Because yes, you will sweat, but there is no question of ending up frozen with this little winter breeze. Also essential: a good pair of cycling gloves and competition glasses.

3. Canoeing on the Dordogne.

Want to try an unusual outdoor activity? Then prepare your waterproof bag and your warm wetsuit, and let's go for a canoe session on the Dordogne .

Gliding on the water in winter is a pretty crazy experience. Between mysterious mist and icy reflections, Scandinavian atmosphere guaranteed.

Little Muule tip : warm and waterproof gloves (because water in winter is wet and cold) and a 100% waterproof headlamp for daring mules who want to extend until dusk.

4. Make an [almost] polar bivouac.

Because real Bordeaux mules fear neither the cold nor nocturnal creatures.

We recommend you find a nice spot in the forests of the Bordeaux hinterland, like Hostens or the Double forest . And hop, we pitch our tent , light a fire (if it's allowed of course) or take out our camping lamp.

Little Muule tips : asleeping bag for very cold weather (otherwise hello freezing feet), thermal underwear and a compact stove for his pot or his fondue pot (because yes, cheese is life).

5. Night walk along the wine paths.

If you are looking for an original outdoor activity, we recommend a little night hike in the Bordeaux vineyards.

In winter, the moon illuminates the bare vines and the atmosphere is truly magical (and a little scary, you said?). Instead, opt for well-marked routes like those in Saint-Émilion or Margaux . Bonus for epicurean muules: tasting of good bottles on arrival (but only if you have walked a lot, eh).

Muule little tips : a powerful headlamp (it would be a shame to end up in a ditch) and a compressible, warm AND light down jacket , to be on top. And even if it's cold, don't forget your water bottle to stay hydrated (or clean your palate between two small glasses...).

One last one for rainy days? Indoor bouldering.

Okay, we're cheating a little on the 100% outdoor, but when it's raining, it's the right plan to let off steam. Put on a ultra comfortable and stylish t-shirt and good climbing shoes, and off you go for a session in one of the bouldering rooms in Bordeaux, like Arkose or Climb Up . In winter, it's perfect for working on your grip and dreaming of the cliffs of spring.

So, are you ready to brave the winter, people of Bordeaux?

Whether you are a climber, hiker, or just curious, there is bound to be an outdoor activity for you. So now, no more excuses: go out, breathe, and live adventures worthy of real muules.

We are waiting for your feedback. 😉
