Where to go ski touring around Toulouse? 5 spots to ride and breathe!

Powder and wide-open spaces lovers, put on your seal skins and adjust your bindings : we'll take you to explore 5 ski touring spots just a few hours from Toulouse. Whether you're a seasoned skier or an occasional hiker, these Pyrenean destinations promise breathtaking panoramas and, above all, a good dose of adrenaline.

Ready to ride in dream landscapes? Let's go.

1. The Pic du Midi de Bigorre – The star of the peaks

If there is one summit not to be missed, it is the Pic du Midi de Bigorre . This 2,877-metre giant is the Michael Jackson of the Pyrenees: iconic and unmissable. The journey begins with a gentle climb from La Mongie, you continue and once you reach the top, boom: you are on top of the world. The descent in freeride mode? A pure delight. Your legs are shaking, but your smile never leaves you. Be careful though, this is not for the faint-hearted: it is a steep climb. In addition to having a little experience under your belt, we advise you to be well equipped with touring skis , a jacket , trousers and gloves .

Why we recommend it : for the incredible view and the descent that makes your heart race. Thrills guaranteed.

2. Pic de Cagire – Easy rider

Looking for a fun outing without having to be an Olympic athlete? Head to Pic de Cagire , just 1h30 from Toulouse. It's THE perfect spot for beginners or those who simply want to enjoy a beautiful day in the mountains without breaking their thighs too much. You can also put on your snowshoes and go for a fun hike. At 1,912 meters above sea level, the climb is gentle, and the view of the Pyrenees mountain range is just crazy. You're sure to come across families, dogs, skiers, snowshoers... in short, there's something for everyone!

Why we like it : because it's the perfect place for a quiet hike with lots of scenery. Ideal for a first outing.

3. The Néouvielle massif – Wild nature and frozen lakes

If you're the type of person who loves frozen lakes and pine forests, head to the Néouvielle massif . It's often accessed via the Piau-Engaly resort. As soon as you put on your skis , you'll see that you're immersed in a setting worthy of Game of Thrones (spoiler alert: there are no dragons). The routes vary in difficulty, but if you're aiming for the Pic de Néouvielle (3,091 metres), be prepared for a big climb. Once at the top, you can debrief over a nice mulled wine.

Why we love it : because skiing in a nature reserve in the middle of frozen lakes is (really) classy.

4. Le Pic de Peyrelue – Small but mighty

Located in the Ossau Valley, a stone's throw from Spain, the Pic de Peyrelue may be a little more discreet than its big brothers, but it has nothing to envy in terms of sensations. Culminating at 2,430 meters, it offers a technical but super satisfying route. For ski touring lovers who want to avoid the crowds and find themselves alone (or almost) on their summit, this is the perfect destination. Bonus: the view of the Pic du Midi d'Ossau, always majestic, in the background.

Why we like it : because we like the peace and quiet and the Pic de Peyrelue offers everything without the noise of the resorts.

5. The Louron Valley – A hiker’s paradise

If we had to choose the most versatile spot for ski touring near Toulouse, the Louron Valley would be at the top of the ranking. Just an hour and a half away by car, you will find everything you need: gentle slopes, more technical climbs, forests, ridges and even a few good inns to recharge your batteries after the effort. The Cap de Laubère and the Pic d'Aret are must-sees in the valley. The best part: the hikes can be adapted to all levels!

Why we like it : because you can go with friends of different levels and everyone can enjoy it.

Before you leave: little reminders for a good hiker

Ski touring is great, but it takes preparation. Here are a few golden rules to avoid ending up in icicle mode:

  • Check the weather : The Pyrenees are beautiful but capricious. A gust of wind and things can get complicated.
  • Equip yourself properly : Touring skis , avalanche transceiver, shovel, probe… we don’t joke about safety! It’s also important to have the right gear so you don’t freeze. Hat , socks , down jacket , fleece… We have everything you need for skiing. And even heating products for those who are really cold.
  • Take it easy : Ski touring can be an intense activity. Choose a route that is suited to your level.
  • And why not a guide? If it's your first outing or you're exploring a new area, a mountain guide can really make a difference.

So, are you ready to tackle the slopes and enjoy the silence of the summits? These five spots await you with open arms, just a few hours from Toulouse.

Go, go, go!
